What changed
The exam structure stays the same: 110 questions (100 scored, 10 unscored pilot items), 90 minutes, 75% passing in most states. What changed is inside the domains.
Infection control is more scenario-based. The updated CIB puts more weight on practical application — not just "what are the three levels of disinfection" but "a client arrives with an open lesion on her forearm, what do you do before starting the facial." Expect more questions that describe a specific situation and ask you to choose the correct action.
Skin analysis and consultation expanded. The 2026 CIB gives more emphasis to contraindications, Fitzpatrick skin typing, and knowing when to refer a client to a dermatologist. If your study materials treat consultation as a single bullet point, they're not enough.
Safety procedures are weighted higher. Blood exposure protocol, proper disposal of single-use items, and cross-contamination prevention during multi-step services all get more attention. Know the exact blood exposure sequence — stop, gloves, treat, clean, disinfect, document.
What stayed the same
The two-domain structure remains: Scientific Concepts and Skin Care and Services. The passing score is still 75% in most NIC states. The exam is still computer-based at PSI, Prov, or Prometric testing centers depending on your state. The practical exam (where required) is a separate test.
What to do
Check that your study materials reference the 2026 NIC Esthetics CIB, not the pre-2026 version. If you're using a textbook or practice test that was last updated before January 2026, the content weightings may be off. Focus your prep on infection control scenarios and client consultation judgment calls — those are where the emphasis shifted most.
The official CIB is available at nictesting.org. Your state board website will have the version specific to your state's requirements. We cover all state-specific details in our state licensing guides.
