NIC exams via PSI — 70% passing on all modalities

All Tennessee beauty licensing exams are NIC national examinations administered by PSI Services. Written and practical components: $70 each ($140 total exam fees). Fee valid 6 months from PSI receipt. Results immediate at PSI centers. Remote proctoring available for both components since February 1, 2022. 5-year exam eligibility window; unlimited retakes. PSI TN line: 855-340-3710 · test-takers.psiexams.com.

CORE portal — apply within 6 months of passing

All initial applications, renewals, and license management go through the Tennessee CORE portal at core.tn.gov. Apply within 6 months of passing both exams — this window is strictly enforced. Verify license status at verify.tn.gov before working. Late renewal fee: $25 per license.

Domestic violence awareness training — all initial applicants

Effective January 1, 2022, all initial Tennessee beauty license applicants must complete up to 1 hour of free DV awareness training from an approved nonprofit. Typically completed during cosmetology school or online through Barbicide (barbicide.com). Required before submitting initial application.

No CE for practitioners · instructors: 16 hrs

Tennessee requires no continuing education for practitioner renewal (cosmetology, aesthetician, manicurist, master barber). Instructors are the exception — cosmetology and barber instructors must complete 16 hours of CE per 2-year renewal cycle. All practitioner licenses renew every 2 years at $60.

No reciprocity for manicurists

Tennessee does not offer reciprocity for manicurist licenses. All nail technician applicants must complete 600 hours of Tennessee-approved training and pass Tennessee PSI exams, regardless of prior state licensure. Cosmetology, aesthetician, and master barber reciprocity is available ($100 fee) for out-of-state holders with equivalent training.
