Kentucky uses the NIC national exam via PSI — NICPrep is a direct fit

Kentucky uses NIC National Theory and Practical Examinations administered by PSI Services (kbc.ky.gov exam portal). NICPrep's cosmetology question bank is built from the NIC CIB — a direct-fit study resource. Written exam: 100 scored questions, 90 minutes, 70% passing. Practical: 70% passing. Theory scores valid for 6 months. Must pass theory before scheduling practical.

Mandatory 6-month post-exam apprenticeship before full license — unique to Kentucky cosmetology

After passing both the theory and practical exams, Kentucky cosmetology graduates must complete a 6-month apprenticeship working at least 20 hours per week under the supervision of a licensed cosmetologist before the full cosmetology license is issued. This real-world experience requirement is unusual nationally — most states issue the license as soon as both exams are passed. Plan your timeline to include this apprenticeship phase. Esthetics and nail technician candidates do not have this same apprenticeship requirement.

The Kentucky Board of Cosmetology (KBC · kbc.ky.gov) governs cosmetology, esthetics, and nail tech licenses. Barbers are licensed by the separate Kentucky Board of Barbering. Payment: online credit/debit card only since July 2023 — physical checks and cash not accepted. All earned hours expire after 5 years from enrollment.

Step-by-step: how to get licensed

  1. Complete 1,500 hours at a KBC-approved cosmetology school (within 5 years of enrollment)

School reports your verified graduation to KBC. Board approves and notifies PSI. PSI emails your eligibility notification.

  2. Apply for and pass the NIC theory exam via PSI ($85)

Must pass theory (70%) before scheduling practical. Theory score valid 6 months. Schedule at psiexams.com or call (855) 340-3713. Retest every 30+ days. Create/use same PSI account with student permit number as Candidate ID.

  3. Apply for and pass the NIC practical exam via PSI ($85)

Submit practical application separately after passing theory. 70% passing. Bring solid-color medical scrubs (no white), kit ≤24"×24"×24", manikin head, full manikin hand, EPA-approved disinfectant wipes. Two forms of valid ID. Arrive 30 minutes early — late arrival forfeits fee.

  4. Complete 6-month post-exam apprenticeship (20+ hrs/week minimum)

Work under the supervision of a licensed cosmetologist for 6 consecutive months at minimum 20 hours per week. This is a unique Kentucky requirement — full license is not issued until apprenticeship is complete.

  5. Submit full license application with all documentation and receive your Kentucky cosmetology license

Annual renewal July 1–31. Online payment only. No CE required. Expired <5 years: restoration fee + back fees. Expired 5+ years: retake both exams.

Kentucky · Barber

Barber license — separate board.

Kentucky barbers are regulated by the Kentucky Board of Barbering — completely separate from the Kentucky Board of Cosmetology. Barber licensing requirements, exam procedures, and renewal are handled independently. Contact the Kentucky Board of Barbering directly for current hour requirements, exam vendor, and renewal schedule.

Barbers in Kentucky — separate Board of Barbering, not KBC

The Kentucky Board of Cosmetology (KBC) does not regulate barbers. If you want to obtain a barber license in Kentucky, you must apply through the Kentucky Board of Barbering. Licensed cosmetologists seeking a barber license, or licensed barbers seeking a cosmetology license, must meet the additional requirements of the respective board. Contact the Kentucky Board of Barbering for current requirements, as barber regulations are maintained separately from KBC. Barbers in Kentucky are not subject to KBC's annual July renewal cycle.

Kentucky · All license types

Rules that apply to every KY beauty license.

NIC exams via PSI — theory before practical · separate applications

Kentucky uses NIC national examinations administered by PSI Services. Two critical procedural rules: (1) Theory exam must be passed before applying for the practical exam — theory scores valid 6 months; (2) Applications for theory and practical must be submitted separately — no combined application will be accepted. Exam fees: $85 theory + $85 practical = $170 total. Passing score: 70% on both for cosmetologists, estheticians, and nail technicians (instructors: 80% theory, 85% practical). Retest minimum: 30 days between attempts. PSI phone: (855) 340-3713 (M–F 6:30am–9pm CST, Sat–Sun 8am–4:30pm CST).

Annual July renewal — no CE required

Kentucky cosmetology, esthetics, and nail tech licenses renew annually between July 1 and July 31. This is one of a small number of states with annual (not biennial) renewal. No CE is required for any Kentucky beauty license renewal. Payment: online credit/debit card only since July 2023 — no physical checks, money orders, or cash accepted. Expired less than 5 years: pay restoration fee plus all back renewal fees. Expired 5 or more years: must retake and pass both theory and practical exams.

Hours expire after 5 years from enrollment

All training hours earned at a Kentucky school expire 5 years from your original enrollment date. If you complete your hours but don't pursue licensure within that window, your hours become invalid and you must re-enroll. Plan your exam timeline accordingly.

Cosmetology post-exam apprenticeship — unique to Kentucky

Cosmetology is the only Kentucky beauty license requiring a post-exam apprenticeship. After passing both NIC exams, cosmetology graduates must complete 6 consecutive months of supervised work at minimum 20 hours per week before the full cosmetology license is issued. Esthetics and nail technology do not have this requirement.

Practical exam logistics — what to bring

Bring to the practical exam: solid-color medical scrubs (no white, no school name visible); supply kit no larger than 24"×24"×24"; two labeled trash containers (single-use/multi-use); EPA-approved disinfectant wipes (bactericidal, virucidal, fungicidal); hand sanitizer with manufacturer label; manikin head; full manikin hand for nail sections; and two valid forms of ID. Arrive 30 minutes early — late arrival forfeits the exam fee.

Official Kentucky licensing portal

Last verified May 2026 against the Kentucky Board of Cosmetology (kbc.ky.gov) and PSI Kentucky Cosmetology Test Taker Guide (effective March 19, 2026). The 6-month post-exam apprenticeship requirement is confirmed from KBC and multiple Kentucky cosmetology school sources. NICPrep is an independent prep resource and is not affiliated with KBC, PSI, or the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
