Step-by-step: how to get licensed

  1. Complete 1,500 hours at a Board-approved cosmetology school (or 3,000-hr apprenticeship)

    Your school submits official transcripts directly to Prometric. Do not submit transcripts yourself.

  2. Apply through Prometric's system and receive ATT email

    ATT (Authorization to Test) emailed within 2 business days after Prometric approval. ATT includes unique User ID and Password for IQT testing. Do not attempt to create an IQT login before receiving ATT.

  3. Schedule and pass both NIC exams via IQT Testing (75% each)

    Written: 90-minute computer-based test. Practical: 2–3 hours, bring mannequin + clamp + full kit. Both must be passed within 2 years of applying. Prometric phone: 1-866-773-1114.

  4. Apply for license through DELPROS and receive your cosmetology license

    Biennial renewal October 31 of even years (~$110). No CE. Renew via DELPROS portal.

NIC exams via Prometric/IQT — 2022 version · 75% passing

Delaware uses NIC national examinations (2022 version, effective August 1, 2024) administered by Prometric via IQT Testing. All previous 2017-version exams were replaced August 1, 2024. Verify current CIBs at prometric.com/exams/nicde. Passing score: 75% on both written and practical. ATT emailed within 2 business days of Prometric approval. Do not attempt to log into IQT before receiving ATT. Both exams must be passed within 2 years of applying. Prometric phone: 1-866-773-1114 (M–F 8am–5pm EDT).

Temporary permit — 30 days

If eligible for exam admission, Delaware offers a 30-day temporary permit to practice under supervision. Extendable only if you fail the exam and re-register for the next available date. Submit extension requests via DELPROS. Permit expires if both exams are not passed within 2 years of applying.

Biennial renewal — October 31 of even-numbered years · No CE

All Delaware cosmetology, aesthetician, barber, and nail technician licenses renew biennially on October 31 of even-numbered years (2024, 2026, 2028, etc.). Renewal fee: approximately $110. No CE required for any practitioner license type. Renew online via DELPROS (Delaware Professional Regulation Online Service).
