CE required — 6 hours per biennial cycle · 4 discipline-specific + 2 Iowa law/sanitation

Iowa is one of roughly 14 states requiring CE for cosmetology license renewal. Per biennial cycle: minimum 6 hours total — at least 4 hours specific to your license discipline (cosmetology technique, hair, skin, or nail content) plus at least 2 hours in Iowa barbering and cosmetology laws, rules, and infection control. First renewal is exempt from CE requirements. All CE may be completed online through Iowa Board-approved providers. Renewal window: May 1 – December 31 of odd-numbered years.

CE scales with number of licenses held

If you hold multiple Iowa beauty licenses, CE requirements increase: one license = 6 hrs; two licenses = 10 hrs (4 hrs per discipline + 2 hrs Iowa law); three licenses = 14 hrs (4 hrs per discipline + 2 hrs Iowa law). Instructors require 12–16 hrs including teaching methodology hours.

Iowa · All license types

Rules that apply to every IA beauty license.

NIC exams via PSI — 75% passing

Iowa uses NIC National Examinations administered by PSI Services. Both written theory and practical exams required at 75% passing for all license types. No apprenticeship allowed — all training must be completed at a DIAL-approved school. Minimum age 17, with HS diploma or equivalent.

CE required — scales with licenses held · First renewal exempt

Iowa requires CE for all beauty license renewals. The CE requirement scales with the number of active Iowa beauty licenses you hold:

All CE hours may be completed online from Iowa Board-approved providers. The first renewal after initial licensure is exempt from CE requirements. Before signing up for a course, verify it meets Iowa Administrative Code 481—944 requirements.

Biennial renewal — May 1 to December 31 of odd-numbered years

Iowa beauty licenses renew biennially. The renewal window opens May 1 and closes December 31 of odd-numbered years (2025, 2027, 2029, etc.). Renewal fee: $60 for all Barbering and Cosmetology Arts and Sciences licenses. No reciprocity without Iowa Board review of training equivalency. No apprenticeship available — school-only state.
