Renewal exam required — 20 Kansas rules questions (75%) at every renewal

Kansas requires licensees to pass a 20-question Kansas rules and regulations exam as part of every license renewal — scoring at least 75% (15/20 correct). This is separate from the initial licensing exam. Confirm current renewal exam details with the Kansas Board of Cosmetology (KBOC) at kansas.gov/kboc.

Cosmetology Licensure Compact (April 2025)

Kansas became the ninth state to enact the Cosmetology Licensure Compact in April 2025. When fully operational, this allows Kansas licensees to practice across all compact member states with a multistate license. Confirm current Compact activation status at kansas.gov/kboc.

Kansas · Barber

Barber license — separate Kansas Board of Barbering.

Kansas barbers are regulated by the separate Kansas Board of Barbering, not the Kansas Board of Cosmetology. Barber licensing requires: NIC Barber Styling Theory exam + practical exam + Kansas Rules and Regulations exam — all at 80% passing (higher than cosmetology's 75%). No barber apprenticeships currently allowed — all training must be at a licensed barber college.

Barbers: separate board, 80% passing on THREE exams — NIC theory + practical + KS R&R exam

Kansas barbers are licensed through the Kansas Board of Barbering, not the Kansas Board of Cosmetology. The barber exam requires passing three separate exams at 80% or higher: (1) NIC Barber Styling Theory exam, (2) a barber practical examination, and (3) a Kansas Rules and Regulations exam. This is a higher passing threshold than cosmetology (75%). No barber apprenticeship currently available — school at a licensed barber college is required. Contact the Kansas Board of Barbering for current hour requirements, fees, and exam scheduling.

Crossover note

Licensed Kansas cosmetologists cannot directly crossover to barbering without additional education at a licensed barber college. Similarly, licensed barbers must meet Kansas Board of Cosmetology requirements to obtain a cosmetology license.

Rules that apply to every KS beauty license.

NIC exams — 75% passing · 12-month window to complete all sections

Kansas uses NIC National Examinations (administered by the Board's designated testing vendor). Written and practical exams both required at 75% passing for cosmetology, esthetics, and nail technology. Barber: 80% on three exams (separate board). If one section fails, retake only that section — no waiting period required. All sections must be passed within 12 months of the initial application date. Exam fees: $75 written + $75 practical ($150 total). Payments by check or money order payable to the Kansas State Board of Cosmetology.

Renewal exam — 20 Kansas rules questions (75%) required at every renewal

Kansas is unusual in requiring a rules and regulations exam as part of every biennial renewal. The exam consists of 20 questions covering Kansas cosmetology statutes (K.S.A. 65-1901 to 65-1909 and related K.A.R. regulations). A score of at least 75% (15/20) is required to renew. This is separate from any CE requirement.

Military spouses — expedited licensing and fee exemptions

Kansas has strong military accommodations under K.S.A. 48-3406: military spouses of active service members are exempt from all KBOC licensing fees (application, renewal, endorsement, reciprocity, permit). KBOC must issue licenses to qualifying military spouses within 15 days of a complete application (vs 45 days standard). Temporary permits available when credentials don't exactly match Kansas scope.

Cosmetology Licensure Compact (member since April 2025)

Kansas joined the Cosmetology Licensure Compact in April 2025, becoming the ninth member state. When fully operational, Kansas licensees can obtain a multistate license for practice across all compact member states. Confirm current Compact activation status at kansas.gov/kboc.
