Oklahoma uses the NIC theory exam via Prov — NICPrep is a direct fit for the written portion

Oklahoma uses the NIC National Cosmetology Theory Examination administered by Prov (the only theory exam provider for Oklahoma). NICPrep's cosmetology question bank is built from the NIC CIB — a direct-fit study resource for the written theory exam. The practical exam is administered separately by the Board — review the Oklahoma-specific practical CIB for practical requirements.

Practical exam — mannequins only, NO live models · Board-administered

Oklahoma's practical exam is administered by the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering, not by Prov or PSI. Mannequin head and mannequin hand are required for all services — no live models are used. The Board provides over-the-chair mannequin head stands. Mannequin hands must have artificial nails glued on and polished. Contact the Board directly at 405-521-2441 for current practical exam dates and locations.

The Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering (oklahoma.gov/cosmo · 405-521-2441 · OSBCB@cosmo.ok.gov) governs all beauty licenses in Oklahoma. One unified board covers cosmetology, barbering, esthetics, and nail technology. All licenses and work permits must be posted in public view with a current photo attached.

Oklahoma · All license types

Rules that apply to every OK beauty license.

Split exam system — Prov for theory, Board for practical

Oklahoma's licensing exam uses two separate systems. The NIC Theory Examination is administered exclusively by Prov (provexam.com · 801-733-4455). The practical exam is administered by the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering at designated state exam sites. Mannequin head and mannequin hand are required for all practical exams — no live models are used in any Oklahoma licensing practical exam. The Board provides over-the-chair mannequin head stands. Mannequin hands must have artificial nails glued on and polished for nail services. Check oklahoma.gov/cosmo/exams for current practical exam dates and locations.

Annual birthday renewal — all license types

All Oklahoma beauty licenses renew annually on the last day of the licensee's birth month. $80 renewal fee for all individual licenses. No CE required. License and work permit must be posted in public view with a current photo attached at all times. Establishments are inspected at least twice a year.

Credit hours accepted

Oklahoma accepts credit hours as an alternative to clock hours for training. Cosmetology: 1,500 clock hours or 50 credit hours. Esthetics/Nail Tech: 600 clock hours or 30 credit hours. Confirm with your school which system applies to their program.

Additional specialty certificates

Oklahoma also issues specialty certificates for: Blow-Dry/Styling ($80), Eyelash Extension Technician ($80), and Makeup Artist ($80). These are in addition to standard licenses and require separate exams and fees. Contact the Board at OSBCB@cosmo.ok.gov for current requirements.
