South Carolina uses the NIC national exam via Prov — NICPrep is a direct fit

South Carolina uses NIC National Theory and Practical Examinations administered by Prov (transitioned from PSI). NICPrep's cosmetology question bank is built from the NIC CIB — a direct-fit study resource. 75% passing on both written and practical. Apply through the LLR licensing portal at eservice.llr.sc.gov.

4 hours CE required at every renewal — plus no reciprocity, endorsement only

South Carolina requires 4 contact hours of Board-approved CE per biennial renewal cycle. Topics must cover board laws/regulations, client safety, and/or infection control/sanitation. CE may be completed in-person or online through Board-approved providers. First-time licensees are exempt from CE at their initial renewal. South Carolina does not offer reciprocity — out-of-state practitioners must apply by endorsement (which requires passing the NIC exam or having 2+ years of active licensure). A state law exam is also required for endorsement applicants.

The South Carolina State Board of Cosmetology (under the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation) governs cosmetology, esthetics, and nail tech licenses. Apply and manage licenses through the LLR eService portal at eservice.llr.sc.gov. Results are immediate for both NIC theory and practical exams via Prov.

NIC exams via Prov — same across all modalities

South Carolina uses NIC national examinations administered by Prov (which replaced PSI as the exam vendor). Written: $55. Practical: $65. Both 75% passing. Results given immediately. Cannot retake failed section on the same day — must re-register through LLR eService. If a license has been expired for more than 3 years, both NIC theory and practical exams must be passed again to reinstate.

CE: 4 hours biennial — cosmetology, esthetics, nail tech only

South Carolina requires 4 contact hours of Board-approved CE per biennial cycle for cosmetologists, estheticians, and nail technicians. Topics must cover board laws/regulations, client safety, and/or infection control including sanitation and disinfection. CE available in-person or online through Board-approved providers (find approved providers at llr.sc.gov/cosmo). First-time licensees exempt from CE at their initial renewal. Barbers are CE-exempt under current SC regulations.

No reciprocity — endorsement only

South Carolina does not offer reciprocity for any license type. Endorsement (transfer from another state) requires: actively licensed in another state AND either (a) passed NIC theory and practical exams in that state, OR (b) held an active license for at least 2 years AND completed 4 hrs of Board-approved CE. Additionally, endorsement applicants must pass a South Carolina state law exam. License verification must be sent directly from the original state board to SC LLR (not from the applicant). Endorsement fee: $60.

Renewal: March 10 of odd-numbered years

All cosmetology, esthetics, nail technician, barber, and instructor licenses renew biennially on March 10 of odd-numbered years at 11:59 PM. Renewal fee: $52 for individual licenses. Reinstatement fee: $152 for expired licenses. Apply well before the deadline — processing takes time and the Board processes in order received.

No apprenticeship for any license type

South Carolina does not offer apprenticeship pathways for cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology, or barber licensure. All training must be completed at a Board-approved school.
