NIC exams via D.L. Roope — not PSI

Wisconsin uses NIC national examinations administered by D.L. Roope Administrations LLC — not PSI Services. D.L. Roope handles cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology, barber, instructor, electrology, and hair designer exams for Wisconsin. Register at dlroope.com or call 1-888-375-2020. Passing score: 75% on both written and practical for all license types. Exam results posted online within 2–5 business days. Disinfectant wipes required; spray disinfectants and simulated disinfectants prohibited.

Training time windows — required by statute

Wisconsin sets both minimum and maximum time windows for completing training programs — unusual among states:

Renewal dates

CE — barbers vs everyone else

Barbers must complete 4 hours of CE per 2-year reporting period (effective April 1, 2013) through approved educational formats per SPS 50.421. Cosmetologists, estheticians, and nail technicians are NOT subject to routine CE requirements. Under Wis. Stat. 454.12, CE may be imposed as part of a disciplinary proceeding for those license types, but is not a standard renewal requirement.

No cosmetology-to-barber crossover

Wisconsin does not offer a crossover program for licensed cosmetologists who want to become barbers. A full 1,800-hour barber program must be completed. Similarly, licensed barbers who want a cosmetologist license must complete the full cosmetology program.

Strict reciprocity requirements

Wisconsin's reciprocity standard is stricter than most states. All four modalities require 4,000 hours of licensed practice in another state, a clean disciplinary record, and current active licensure. Applicants who do not meet the 4,000-hour requirement must enroll in and complete a DSPS-approved Wisconsin school.

Official Wisconsin licensing portal

Last verified May 2026 against Wisconsin DSPS (dsps.wi.gov) and D.L. Roope Administrations (dlroope.com). Wisconsin uses NIC exams via D.L. Roope — not PSI.
